In collaboration with the Government of Ukraine and non-governmental organizations, UNFPA Ukraine is providing comprehensive support to survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) through various services and programs. One such initiative is a rehabilitation program designed specifically for women and girls who have experienced gender-based violence, including those who were held in captivity or lived in previously occupied regions.
The two-week rehabilitation program offers specialized care to help participants stabilize their emotional state, reduce post-traumatic symptoms, regain a sense of control, and rebuild their self-esteem and confidence. Through a combination of psychological support, self-help techniques, and social reintegration activities, women learn to identify and manage triggers, practice self-care, and interact effectively with others.
“The goal is to identify the experience, its impact, how it affects the person today and how it has changed their quality of life,” says program psychotherapist Tetiana Zvenyhorodska. “Then we move on step by step. It’s like growing wings; they spread them and move forward.”
The program takes a comprehensive approach, addressing not only mental and physical health but also promoting opportunities for employment, education, housing, and financial security. In a safe and supportive space, participants share their experiences, receive personalized case management, and develop individual recovery plans tailored to their needs.
“I learned to deal with my panic attacks. For me, that was a big change because there was a time when I’d face 3 or 4 panic attacks a day,” says Yulia, a participant of a program. “Rehabilitation is important. This program is important.”
The rehabilitation program provides psychoeducation and therapeutic support, including both individual and group sessions, along with medical examinations and treatment. Participants receive training on self-care techniques and coping strategies, as well as referrals to local services for ongoing support. Additionally, survivors of gender-based violence are provided with help cards and essential resources to assist in their recovery.
The rehabilitation program is free and follows a holistic, trauma-informed model that prioritizes survivors' autonomy, strengths, and well-being. By fostering cooperation, empowerment, and self-reliance, the program helps women rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.
This initiative is developed and implemented by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, in partnership with civil organizatios, and the Government Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy, with financial support from UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict.

Le kit presseSince Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Ukraine has faced unprecedented levels of violence. However, much of the trauma inflicted by war remains invisible to society. The United Nations estimates that the number of people who have suffered sexual violence during the conflict is 10 to 20 times higher than official figures.
