From R&D to the commercialisation of the ‘Made in France’ battery

ACC (Automotive Cells Company), Europe’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, will be taking part in the 2026 Paris Motor Show at the ‘La Fabrique de l’Innovation’ stand, an area dedicated to the excellence and dynamism of the French automotive sector, organised by the Plateforme Automobile (PFA).

On this occasion, ACC will showcase its 5 millionth (5,000,000) lithium-ion cell produced at its Gigafactory in Billy-Berclau / Douvrin (Hauts-de-France), representing nearly 40,000 vehicles already fitted with ACC batteries; one of our batteries will also be displayed in a cutaway vehicle provided by the Stellantis Group.

Since the previous Paris Motor Show, in just two years, ACC has grown significantly and its industrial maturity has evolved considerably:
  • Its cells and modules power eight High Range electric vehicle models marketed by the Stellantis Group (Peugeot E-3008, E-5008, Jeep Compass, Lancia Gamma, DS No. 7, No. 8, Citroën C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland).
  • The first block of the Gigafactory is operating on a 5x8 shift pattern, 7 days a week, with scrap rates steadily approaching target levels.
  • The ramp-up is continuing; industrialisation and scaling up are now well and truly underway.
  • Module production volume for the month of September alone is close to the total production level achieved by ACC for the whole of 2025.
  • ACC is successfully supplying Stellantis in line with agreed production plans.
  • The second production block, with a capacity of 12.9 GWh, is scheduled to commence production in 2027 to power the Mercedes Group’s electric cars.
In a context shaped by geopolitical tensions, rising energy prices, economic uncertainty and climate imperatives, ACC offers a concrete European answer to the challenges of transport electrification. Building and mastering battery technology in Europe is critical to securing strategic supply chains, preserving industrial jobs and know-how, and strengthening the continent's technological sovereignty.

This is why Europe’s ambition to promote ‘Made in Europe’ must now be swiftly translated into the introduction of an Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA), which will provide the necessary support for the demand for batteries manufactured in Europe.
As Allan Swan, CEO of ACC since May 2026, points out:

‘Reaching 5 million cells produced in France is an important milestone for ACC and a clear demonstration of the progress achieved by our teams over the past years. It shows that Europe can develop and industrialise advanced battery technologies at scale.’

‘At the same time, the competitiveness challenge remains. Europe must now ensure that its industrial ambitions are supported by a framework that enables battery manufacturing to compete on a level playing field. Only a competitive European offering will be able to meet the demand for ‘Made in the EU’ production.’

ACC will continue to innovate and develop next-generation products offering best-in-class performance and real-world driving range. Combined with faster charging times, these technologies will help accelerate the transition to electric mobility while meeting consumers' expectations.
