Framatome has been selected by Electrabel (Engie Group) to modernize the rod control system of the Tihange 3 nuclear reactor, a strategic step in extending the operating life of this facility. Commissioned in 1985, Tihange 3 is a pressurized water reactor (PWR) with a capacity of 1,030 megawatts.
The modernization of the rod control system, which will extend over several years, includes the complete replacement of control cabinets with Rodline® technology, as well as all engineering, on-site installation and maintenance activities. This system plays an essential role in reactor control, ensuring precise power control and automatic failover in case of an unforeseen event. Framatome's Rodline® solution is the most widely used digital rod control technology in the world.
This project is part of the agreement signed in 2023 between Engie and the Belgian government, aimed at extending the service life of Belgian pressurized water reactors (PWR) and strengthening the country's energy security, and aligns with Europe's commitment to a responsible energy transition. Safely extending the service life of existing power plants ensures reliable supply and supports a sustainable, low-carbon energy mix.
“This new contract reflects Electrabel's renewed trust in Framatome and our expertise in modernizing nuclear facilities. We are proud to contribute to the safety and longevity of the Belgian nuclear fleet, " declared Laurent Thieffry, Senior Executive Vice-President I&C Business Unit at Framatome. “This partnership is part of a long-term vision, driven by the commitment and performance of the teams at Electrabel and Framatome."
