It’s a magazine born in 1982, on the ESSEC campus...
Since then, Challenges has grown a lot. With more than 130,000 subscribers, the weekly is sometimes compared to Forbes, notably for its emblematic rankings of the largest French fortunes.
But the 2024 edition sparked controversy: the Arnault family, despite being number one in the rankings, was not featured on the magazine’s cover. Some saw this as the influence of LVMH, a minority shareholder. The management defends this as a deliberate editorial choice.
Still owned by its founder Claude Perdriel (98 years old), the weekly, which covers economics, politics, and international news, still claims its optimistic editorial line. Despite an inflationary context for print media, Challenges maintains its commitment to remain affordable for all budgets.
Pierre-Henri de Menthon, editor-in-chief, is the guest of our podcast “Ça bouge dans les médias.” 20 minutes of interview to help you understand their challenges.
On the agenda:
🔵 Marking its difference in economic coverage
🔵 The controversy over the Arnault family’s absence from the cover
🔵 The consequences of LVMH’s entry into the capital
🔵 The magazine’s governance
