“We need to stop putting polar bears everywhere when talking about global warming!”

Launched in 2020, the media outlet Vert set out with a mission: to raise awareness of environmental issues among the widest possible audience with a “simple and funky” approach. It’s an educational effort that also includes offering training inside newsrooms to help “transform the media landscape” in the face of the climate emergency.

Vert refuses the label of an activist media, but gladly accepts the one of an engaged media. Its latest fundraising campaign is aimed at supporting the project “Chaleurs actuelles” ("Current Heatwaves"), which will strengthen its investigative work “on the far right, its climate change deniers, and its media allies.” Over €180,000 has been raised so far.

To ensure its independence, Vert has opted for an ad-free model, relying 90% on donations, with each of its 6,000 subscribers paying a completely voluntary amount.

Its co-founder and editor-in-chief, Loup Espargilière, is the guest on our podcast Media On the Move. A 15–20 minute interview to help you understand their challenges and mission.

The last episode of the year!

Topics covered include:

  • How editorial teams are being transformed through an ecological lens

  • A profile of Vert’s typical reader

  • The connection between the far right and disinformation

  • The economic gamble of Vert’s media model
