L’Express

On the occasion of L’Express’s 70th anniversary, the editorial team of the pioneer news magazine dived into its archives to celebrate them in a special issue. About 200 pages tell the story of the newspaper, intertwined with that of France and the world, profoundly transformed over seven decades. Launched in 1953 by the iconic Françoise Giroud and Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber, L’Express has always proudly upheld its commitments. Opposed to the Indochina war and supportive of decolonization at its start, the title now embraces its liberal and pro-European editorial line. Under the leadership of its owner Alain Weill, it openly declares its ambition to become the "French Economist." In this episode, its editor-in-chief Eric Chol reviews some of the highlights in L’Express’s history and explains his editorial vision and positioning in the highly competitive French news magazine market.

Le Nouvel Obs

No longer call it L’Obs, but Le Nouvel Obs. The famous weekly officially relaunched on March 21 with a new name, a new visual identity, and especially a revamped website—its biggest project. In a difficult context for news magazines, the title’s sales declined by 7% in 2023, and the weekly, launched 60 years ago by Jean Daniel and Claude Perdriel, is again running at a loss. It has set a major goal: to increase its digital subscriber base by 20% by 2025. Facing these many challenges, its CEO Julie Joly explains how the news magazine, backed by the Le Monde group, plans to write this new chapter of its history.

La Tribune Dimanche

Launching a print newspaper in 2023? A Sunday paper? And in 80 days? That’s the challenge Bruno Jeudy took on. “I’m at the right age to lead such a crazy mission!” says the 60-year-old deputy editorial director of La Tribune Dimanche, who has worked for Le Parisien, Le Figaro, Paris Match, and Le JDD. A generalist spin-off of the economic site La Tribune, the Sunday newspaper hit the newsstands last October 8 with about twenty journalists. It was immediately described as an alternative to the Journal du Dimanche since its editorial shift. Bought by the media branch of CMA CGM, part of the shipping group led by Rodolphe Saadé, La Tribune Dimanche aims to win over disappointed JDD readers by positioning itself as a “newspaper of nuance” and pluralism. Bruno Jeudy shares the obstacles and adventures of this project on MediaConnect’s podcast.
